Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

An Effective Procedure for Reducing Intraocular Pressure

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is an in-office treatment that is performed to lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma. It has a proven record of success, with results lasting for three to five years. After that, the procedure can be repeated if required.

What Is Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)?

SLT is a surgical procedure that is used to reduce the intraocular pressure in the eyes of glaucoma patients. This treatment is performed when eye drops lose their effectiveness in lowering the pressure of the eye or cause side effects. It is also used to treat the initial stages of glaucoma. Patients suffering from open-angle glaucoma (primary or secondary) are eligible for this type of laser surgery.

What Happens During This Procedure?

During SLT, a laser is selectively applied to the eye’s drainage tissue. This initiates a chemical and biological transformation in the eye tissue. It improves fluid drainage from the eye and eventually lowers the IOP. The results may take about one to three months to fully reveal themselves.

Does this Procedure Produce Permanent Results?

Remember that selective laser trabeculoplasty is not a cure for glaucoma. Medication, along with surgery, may be required to maintain the results. Proper follow-up and eye testing from an ophthalmologist are also critical. But the good news is that when it’s used as an initial treatment for glaucoma, SLT lowers the level of intraocular pressure by almost 30%. This effect is similar to some of the most potent medications used for treating glaucoma. The laser surgery for glaucoma further reduces the IOP if the patient is already taking glaucoma medicine. The effects of the treatment generally last from one to five years but could last longer in some cases.
